A healthy puppy that conforms well to the breed-standard can only be purchased at a
serious, responsible breeder.

It is very important for prospective owners to visit the breeder. Have him or her show you the mother of the puppies, some times the sire may be in the house as well. Beware if the breeder refuses - most likely these puppies come from a shady background.
The Big Day: getting your Puppy!

A Chow puppy can leave its mother and sibblings at the age of 8 weeks. By that time he should be dewormed, have received his first shots and possibly have been implanted with a microchip or at least be tatooed.

Don't get a dog from the Petshop!
Please DO NOT buy a puppy from petshops or so called backyard breeders.

These dogs often are kept under terrible conditions and were separated much too early from their mother and litter-mates.

An important part of the socialisation phase was skipped this way and can lead to serious character deficiencies. Health problems are likely to occur too.

Decisive factors when choosing a puppy should be

  • a positive impression of the breeder,
  • friendly behavior of the puppies towards humans
  • and of course sympathy!

With these points in mind you can expect many years of happiness with your four-legged family-member.
